Detoxing & Cleansing- Why it’s important to take out the trash!
If you regularly complete a detox/cleanse programs a few times per year, than bravo! You clearly understand the importance of taking that time out for yourself to remove as many toxins from your body on a regular basis as possible. The average person may retain between 1 to 6 kilos of undigested food, toxins and waste in the colon. Imagine for a minute the effects of this, internally within your body. On average, we contain traces of between 400 to 800 chemicals and preservatives in our bodies. Food has a transit time of approximately 18-20 hours, meaning that after every meal we should be eliminating waste and going to the bathroom.

How to detox naturally
Water – the essential liquid of life. We should drink 1L per 22kg of body weight per day each day to help detox our body. Therefore if you weigh 65kg, you should be aiming for on average 3L of water per day to stay hydrated and assist detoxification. Of course if you are drinking caffeine-based drinks, you will need to add on more water to counteract their dehydrating affects. Adding a slice of lemon to your water actually helps alkalize, detox and cleanse your system. Fresh Ginger, or peppermint oil are two great ways to help feelings of nausea or dizziness. Remember – what ever you can get in the body, you can get out through the colon or the lymph. Continue to drink water with lemon or greens to alkalize and energise your system daily.
Breathe – remember to take deep oxygenation breaths several times daily. Our cells need oxygen to thrive!! Cancer and disease thrive in an oxygen deficient body. Taking exercise classes such as Yoga can encourage deep, cleansing breaths and play an important role in promoting detoxification. It can helps clear out carbon dioxide from the lung tissue, stimulates the organs of digestion and can, over time, retrain the diaphragm to move freely.
Eat Alkaline foods– Our body has a pH of 7.35-7.45 which is a slightly alkaline state. Most people consume acidic foods and live an acidic lifestyle that is high stress, fast paced and laden with fast or convenient type style foods placing a large strain on our body. Train your taste buds to crave more alkaline foods to help your bodies natural process of detoxification. You can do this by increasing your intake of alkaline foods and reducing some acidic foods such as:
- Animal products – meat, chicken, dairy products, milk, cheese, eggs, coffee, soft drinks, processed and packaged fruit juices and cordials, alcohol, breads, pastas, processed foods, chocolate, lollies, sugary foods.
- Grain products- Barley, bran, oat bran, wheat, bcrn, cornstarch, crackers, soda, flour, wheat flour, white flour, noodles, oatmeal, Oats (rolled), rice
- Aspartame – a silent killer – sugar free is not the answer. The FDA has documented over 92 recognised symptoms from Aspartame, mainly Diet Coke, Coke Zero, Pepsi Max, Nutrasweet, Splenda, Chewing gum all contain it – stay away from any products containing Aspartame.
Acidity and dehydration can cause the red blood cells to stick together. We recommend eating 70% water based, alkalizing foods – mostly green veggies, salads and green smoothies.
